Television Tidbit

How many of you watch BBC America? Or have watched the BBC in England? Notice that they tend to run stuff that could never, ever run here in the states (on the networks, anyhow)? Most especially, their news and opinion shows are of the form that would never survive here, as offended sponsors would pull their support of shows that lambasted them. In England--they actually make the people pay for broadcasting with a terrible TV tax. It's a ridiculous system, wherein they send vans around neighborhoods using specialized electronics surveillance equipment to find folks who are using TVs tax-free. Very draconian, indeed. However, it means that BBC can operate without sponsors. Without sponsors, they are only reigned in by viewers--which allows for shows like Top Gear to succeed. That's kind of cool! So, the question of the day--how in the world do you get the this kind of sponsorship-free TV, without the TV tax police? Or do you like US TV just fine?
